·   Reduces the extent and severity of work related injuries and illnesses

     Improves employee morale and productivity

·   Reduces workers’ compensation costs

     Common Characteristics of Exemplary Workplaces :-

Use of organized and systematic methods to Assign responsibility to managers, supervisors, and employees Inspect regularly for and control hazards Orient and train all employees to eliminate or avoid hazard. The main purpose of effective safety programs in an organization is to prevent work related injuries and accidents.

Safety measures in a factory would cover :-

·       Slipping and falling hazards

·       Collision and obstruction hazards

·       Equipment hazards

·       Fire hazards

·       Hazards from falling objects

 


Safety at Work :-

·      Financial Cost

·      Legal Obligations

 Safety Statement :-

·       Specify how health, safety & welfare will be secured

·       Based on identification of hazards & assessment of risks

·       Include arrangements & resources

·       Specify co-operation required from employees

·       Name people responsible

 Causes for accidents :-

·       Improperly guarded equipment

·       Defective equipment, machines

·       Unsafe storage: congestion, overloading

·       Improper illumination: glare, insufficient light

·       Improper ventilation

·       Falls on stairs, ladders, walkways

·       Congested workplace

·       Unsafe acts such as throwing materials

·       Unsafe procedures in loading, placing or mixing or by lifting improperly

·    People with impaired vision; under the influence of drugs or alcohol; and who exhibit negative, violent behaviors

 Duties Imposed :-

·       To ensure the health, safety & welfare at work of all staff

·       To prepare a safety statement

·       To consult employees

·        To take account of employees views

Employer Obligations :-

·       Design & maintain safe place of work

·       Provide safe means of access

·       Provide & maintain safe plant & equipment

·       Provide necessary; information, instruction, training & supervision

·       Provide & maintain protective clothing & equipment

·       Prepare adequate emergency plans

·       Prevent risks in relation to use of substances

Safety Representative :-

·       Make representations to employers

·       Investigate accidents/dangerous occurrences

·       Liaison with inspectors

·       Carry out inspections

·       Investigate potential hazards

·       Have paid time off for training & duties
